Summer Study Program in Marburg, Germany

The College of Liberal Arts at RIT is again offering all qualified RIT students the opportunity to study German in Marburg , Germany this summer. Students will earn eight quarter credit hours by participating successfully in a four-week intensive language and culture program there.

A unique feature of the program is that a RIT faculty member will be in residence in Marburg to coordinate the program, to supervise the academic progress of the students, to help them adjust to a new culture and environment, and to plan extra-curricular activities for the students. Wilma Wierenga, professor of German at RIT, will serve as resident faculty member this summer.

Marburg is a beautifully preserved medieval city, located an hour's train ride north of Frankfurt . It is the city of St. Elizabeth and the location of the prestigious Phillips-University, the first Protestant German university.

The cultural atmosphere of Marburg is similar to that of a large city, but it has the leisurely pace of a small town. Of the 86.000 inhabitants, 19.000 are students. Marburg is a city of (mostly renovated) half-timbered houses, narrow alleys, and wonderful cafes to sit and watch the world go by. Many famous personalities have either taught or studied at the Phillips University . Among them are the chemist Robert Bunsen, T. S. Elliot, Martin Heidegger, Rudolph Bultmann, Boris Pasternak, and the Grimm brothers, to name but a few. The town invites its visitors to explore the many crooked lanes, the numerous boutiques, and its ethnic restaurants.

Marburg is surrounded by forests and small villages. The area provides excellent opportunities for hiking and biking enthusiasts.
