It was the year I graduated from RIT, the year I got married, the year I started working for Paychex, and the year my wife and I moved to our first house. I wanted to have a daughter and name her Semma. It so happened that Semma was born in Rochester in 2003.

Teaching & Research Interests: I benefit from a dual education in both France and the United States. In France, I lived in Lyon and Paris, and taught English at the beginning and intermediate levels. I also worked for non-profit organizations for the disabled. In the United States, I have lived in six different states in the Pacific Northwest, the Midwest, the South, and the Northeast. Since the beginning of my career as a teacher in the fall of 1990, I have taught all levels of the French curriculum, from first year language classes to graduate seminars on French literature and culture. I have a genuine appreciation for the French language and Francophone cultures. My research focuses primarily on late nineteenth-early twentieth century naturalist fiction. I am currently working on a study examining the intersection between the naturalist aesthetics and nationalist ideologies in France, Belgium, Quebec, and Haiti. My other research interests include contemporary French literature and cinema, gender studies, and sexual and racial politics.
